What Is a Busbar?

Busbar is a rigid metal conductor inside an electrical panel that distributes power to circuit breakers or other connected equipment. The busbar receives electricity from the main breaker and provides contact points for branch circuits. Its design supports organized power distribution while keeping panel connections compact and accessible for inspection.

Key Takeaways About Busbar

  • A busbar is rigid metal, not insulated wire.
  • Its contact points feed branch circuit breakers.
  • A busbar is not the same as a neutral bar.

How Busbar Works

A busbar carries electrical power through a panel and presents connection points for circuit breakers. The main breaker sends power to the busbar, while each breaker draws power for its assigned branch circuit. This arrangement keeps multiple circuit connections aligned inside the panel.

Busbars are commonly made from copper or aluminum and are shaped to fit a specific panel design. Their connection points must match the breakers approved for that panel. A main breaker controls incoming power, while a neutral bar provides a separate connection point for neutral conductors. Damage, overheating, or poor contact can affect breaker connections and may require panel repair.

From the GMB Electric team

When we inspect a busbar, we check its visible contact points, breaker fit, and signs of heat damage or arcing. We also compare the panel layout with the installed breakers so connections remain orderly and suitable for the panel design.

Busbar in Practice: A Real-World Example

A panel repair may involve a breaker that no longer fits firmly against the busbar. The repair process can include inspecting the contact area, identifying heat damage, and correcting the affected panel connection.
