What Is a Photocell?

A photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that switches outdoor lighting on when surrounding light fades and off when daylight returns. It helps automate dusk-to-dawn operation without requiring a person to operate a wall switch. Photocells commonly control porch lights, security lights, parking-area fixtures, and landscape lighting.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • It responds to ambient light, not movement.
  • Correct placement prevents nearby lights from affecting operation.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

Hands wire a small black motion sensor on a wooden workbench with tools and loose connectors nearby

A photocell senses the amount of visible light around its sensor. Its internal control changes the electrical state of the lighting circuit as daylight fades or returns. The connected fixture then turns on or off according to that change. A photocell needs a clear view of the surrounding light to respond consistently.

Installers may place a photocell on an exterior wall, on a lighting fixture, or in a control enclosure. The sensor should face away from the fixture it controls because the fixture's own light can cause unwanted cycling. A motion sensor responds to movement, while a photocell responds to light level. Some outdoor lighting systems use both controls so lights follow daylight conditions and activity.

From the GMB Electric team

When we install outdoor lighting, we check the photocell's position, wiring, and connection to the lighting control. We also look for nearby light sources that could cause cycling. Our team tests the control under changing light conditions so the fixture responds as intended.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may use a photocell with a driveway light so the fixture turns on after daylight fades and switches off after morning light returns. The control can operate the light without daily manual switching.
