What Is Thermal Imaging?

Thermal Imaging is a noncontact inspection method that shows surface temperature differences as an image. An infrared camera detects heat energy from electrical equipment and displays warmer and cooler areas through colors or shades. Electricians use these patterns to identify possible connection, load, or component problems that may require closer testing.

Key Takeaways About Thermal Imaging

  • It displays temperature patterns, not visible light images.
  • A warm area signals a need for further testing.
  • Thermal imaging does not replace electrical measurements.

How Thermal Imaging Works

Two men inspect an electrical panel, one holds a thermal camera while the other points inside in a dim workspace

Thermal Imaging uses an infrared camera to detect heat energy at the surface of electrical equipment. The camera converts differences in detected heat into a visual image. A technician compares similar connections or components and looks for an unusual pattern that deserves closer examination.

During an electrical safety inspection, the camera may scan a panel, disconnect, or accessible connection while the system operates under its normal conditions. A warm area can result from a loose connection, excess current, damaged equipment, or another condition. The image shows where to investigate, but it does not identify the exact cause by itself. Voltage checks, current measurements, visual inspection, and connection testing may confirm the finding.

From the GMB Electric team

When we use thermal imaging during an electrical safety inspection, we compare related components and examine any unusual heat pattern. We pair the image with visual checks and electrical testing, then document the area that needs attention. Our team treats the camera as an inspection aid, not a complete diagnosis.

Thermal Imaging in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an electrical safety inspection, a thermal camera may show one breaker connection warmer than nearby connections. The electrician then de-energizes the equipment when appropriate and checks the connection, conductor, and breaker for the underlying problem.
