What Is a Wire Nut?
Wire Nut is a twist-on connector that joins and insulates stripped electrical wires inside an electrical box or enclosure. The connector has a threaded interior that grips the conductors as the cap turns. Wire nuts come in different sizes and colors for different wire combinations, but each connection must match the conductor type and connector rating.

Key Takeaways About Wire Nut
- Its threaded cap grips twisted conductors.
- The connector must match the wire combination.
- A wire nut is not the same as electrical tape.
How Wire Nut Works

A wire nut works by threading onto prepared conductors and pressing them together inside its insulated cap. The wires are stripped to the proper length, aligned, and twisted or gathered according to the connector design. The cap then holds the conductors in contact while covering the exposed metal.

Wire nuts are selected by the wire material, conductor size, and number of wires in the connection. A connector that is too small may not grip the conductors, while an unsuitable connector can loosen or damage the connection. The finished splice remains inside an approved enclosure, such as a junction box, where the connection stays protected and accessible for service.

From the GMB Electric team
When we inspect a wire nut on an electrical wiring repair, we check the connector size, conductor condition, and visible grip. We also look for loose wires, damaged insulation, or copper that extends beyond the cap. Our team replaces the connector when the splice does not hold securely.
Wire Nut in Practice: A Real-World Example
A loose wall-switch connection may contain conductors joined by a wire nut inside the electrical box. During electrical wiring repair, the connection is checked for a secure grip and replaced when the wires or connector show damage.
